Speaker Event: Monday, June 12th: Justine Barron, Author “They Killed Freddie Gray: The Anatomy of a Police Brutality Cover-Up”
Your zoom RSVP will only be managed by zoom and requires registration on their site.
Join Writers Boot Camp Founder, Jeffrey Gordon (JG) in conversation with WBC alumni Justine Barron, author of the recently published investigative book, They Killed Freddy Gray: The Anatomy of a Police Brutality Cover-Up (Skyhorse/Arcade, August 2023). They will discuss her time as a Writers Boot Camp alumnus and Pro Member–and how that experience helped shape her writing and writing habits throughout her career, as well as how she’s developed into an investigative journalist and been able to curate and manage multiple storytelling formats.
Beyond the book, Justine Barron is the co-producer of a documentary film on the same subject. She writes for print and online media, film, TV, podcasts, and stage. Her work has appeared in The Appeal, Miami Herald, Rolling Stone, FAIR Media, Baltimore Beat, Baltimore Fishbowl, Baltimore Brew, Jewish Journal, Devastator Quarterly, Undisclosed Podcast, Engendered, WLRN-NPR, and on stages across the country.
Recognized as a journalist, storyteller, and screenwriter, Justine has won the Moth storytelling competition four times, was named “Best of Baltimore 2021” for her journalism, won “Best Fresh Voice” in the Female Eye Film Festival, and was awarded a diversity fellowship to the Writers Boot Camp. She has provided writing and consulting services for dozens of political and nonprofit organizations and has also taught writing to adult and college students. She attended Johns Hopkins and Duke Universities, attaining degrees in English Literature.
