Join Writers Boot Camp Founder, Jeffrey Gordon (JG) in conversation with Entertainment Attorney Judith Karfiol of The Law Offices of Judith Karfiol.
Judith Karfiol is a solo practitioner who advises, negotiates, drafts and responds to contracts in the fields of film, television, digital media, animation and literary publishing for artists, independent producers, and production companies.
The discussion for the benefit of Writers Boot Camp’s alumni writers, filmmakers, producers, and other artists, will include important topics that tend to arise about the creation of stories and intellectual property, as well as the adaptation of source material. While inherently the entertainment industry is a litigious business, JG’s candid interview with Judith will shed light on writer concerns when just starting out in their careers and dispel fallacies regarding representation and protection of one’s original material.
Judith began her career in the entertainment industry as a literary agent in Los Angeles. After representing writers, producers, and directors, she decided to pursue a legal career. She attended Southwestern University program of Law, and was admitted to the California Bar in 1992. Her clients have included comedians Marc Maron and Iliza Shlesinger, and she has provided production legal services for the shows Workaholics and Ugly Delicious.
In addition, Judith has been on the faculty of California Institute of the Arts since 2005 in the program of Film and Video, where she teaches basic legal principles and practical issues involved in developing and producing films, starting businesses, and working for others in the film, television, and new media industries. She is a member of the California State Bar, the Beverly Hills Bar Association, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
