Story Structure for the Big and Small Screen
Please join Writers Boot Camp Founder (JG) for this free Mini-Camp to discuss key distinctions and decisions about story structure and project format options.
Mastery of classic structure is crucial in the entertainment industry–and once you know it is more properly of tertiary importance in comparison to the second most important level of writing–Character Development–and the primary level–Fresh Entertainment.
Ultimately, structure fosters the thorough cultivation of a character’s interpersonal experience along the adventure in the 2nd Act. As an audience, once we are grounded and rooting for a Main Character to whom we feel connected, the clever entertainment approach can do its magic.
Without solid structure–which is learned rather than truly intuitive–most projects will lack the necessary and expected compression achieved by structure–and your material will be severely undeveloped in comparison to work by successful writers.
There are many factors that enter into the conversation about success. But the structural distinctions and the corresponding decisions stemming from your format options will profoundly determine from the outset whether a project can fulfill its potential.
JG will share the tenets of structure for feature film and books, compare the variations of writing for TV, and discuss the factors and areas of execution that make books and novels easier or more difficult to write and attract interest from publishers.
Most prose writers will anticipate the eventual adaptation of their material to other outlets. Key decisions in the early stages of conception and writing, as well as the determination of the number of storylines, will determine the latitude of creativity and the range of acceptance of your work.
Feel free to send questions in advance so that other writers may learn from JG’s response. You can email jg@writersbootcamp.com.
Writers Boot Camp has supported 12,000 writers and filmmakers over the past 35 years. Our alumni have won Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes—even the Tony. Our alumni have a few hundred movie and TV credits, including many show runners, some who wrote their first scripts in JG’s living room back in the day. Our alumni also have hundreds of books published—books and novels are much easier once you practice the compression required for movies and television.
